How do I become a licensed social worker in Nebraska?

All social workers in Nebraska firstly should obtain a bachelor’s degree. If you want to apply for an advanced level of social work license you will need to have a master’s degree.

If you have a social work degree you can apply for one of the following licenses:

  • Certified Social Worker (CSW)
  • Certified Master Social Worker (CMSW)
  • Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LMPH)
  • Licensed Independent Mental Health Provider (LIMPH).

Each of these has different educational and experience requirements.

Requirements for a Certified Social Worker License

To obtain a CSW license firstly you should be at least 19. Secondly, you should obtain a bachelor’s degree. After that fill the CSW application form and submit it to the Department of Health and Human Services.

As a supporting document, you will need to attach your ID and Official transcript.

You should pay $125 as an application fee.

Requirements for a Certified Master Social Worker License

To obtain a Certified Master Social Worker License a bachelor’s degree is not enough. You should have a master’s degree.

Secondly, 3.000 hours of supervised social work experience is required. To complete your experience firstly you will need to obtain a CMSW certificate. The certificate is issued by the Department of Health and Human Services.

After that, you should submit to the Department the Application to take the Exam. After receiving the approval from the Department register and pass the ASWB exam. If you are going to practice as a non-clinical social worker you can take only the Masters or the Advanced Generalist exam. Otherwise, you will need to take the clinical exam too.

As an exam fee, you will need to pay $230 to $260 depending on the exam.

After that, you will need to submit the application form with the required documents to the Department.

Requirements for the LMHP and LIMHP

The requirements for LMHP and LIMHP licenses are almost the same:

  • First obtain a master’s degree
  • Second you need to collect 3.000 hours of supervised mental health experience

After that pass the ASWB clinical exam. And apply for your license to the Department.

Nebraska Social worker license renewal

Your license should be renewed every two years. You should complete 32 hours of Continuing Education to renew the license. And, depending on your credentials the renewal fee may vary.

You will get an email with the instructions several days before the license expiration day.

Can you become a social worker without a social work degree?

No. you can’t become a social worker without having at least a bachelor’s degree. You should choose a university that is accredited by the Council on Social work education. Moreover, only for a CSW license, you don’t need to gain experience and pass an exam.

For CMSW, LMPH, and LIMPH the experience and exam scores are required.
